Château Pech-Latt, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, has been a pioneer in organic winegrowing in the Occitanie region since 1968.Situated in the heart of the Corbières, this is one of the largest organic wine estates in the region, covering 120 hectares.
His vision is still to be one step ahead, and with the same determination as 30 years ago, to be an estate that produces singular wines of the highest quality.
1968: a pioneering Château
It took all the fighting spirit and determination of the management and teams at Château Pech-Latt to commit to organic and eco-responsible wine production at a time when these concepts were viewed with a certain scepticism in France.
In 1968, Pech-Latt began de-stemming and crushing the grapes, before organising vinification and bottling directly at the Château.
In 1970, a new step was taken with the ban on chemical weedkillers.
1991: 1st certifications
However, it would be more than 20 years before the work and attention paid to the vines were validated by official bodies.
The 1991 vintage was the first to be produced according to the strictest principles of organic viticulture and obtained ECOCERT "Organic Agriculture" certification in 1993.
Since 2000: Preservation of the estate's biodiversity and reinforcement of organic winegrowing practices.
Château Pech-Latt has made organic viticulture a veritable philosophy of life. The size of the estate and the longevity of this approach help to preserve the terroir so that each cuvée expresses all the richness of our plots.
The Château enjoys a privileged location, surrounded by garrigue and the Alaric mountains, which protect it from extreme weather (e.g. frost, hail). No intensive cultivation surrounds the land, and no harmful inputs are used, ensuring that our sustainable practices are effective for the vines and our grapes. The environment is preserved and healthy.
We continue to work hard to protect animals, both pollinators and those that help renew the soil. The estate is home to a large number of species, such as the bats that nest in a sheepfold that serves as a protected shelter under the aegis of the National Ecological Centre.
The care we take also helps to preserve our plant environment, which is teeming with trees and plants endemic to the region: olive trees, fig trees, cypresses, aloe vera, etc., and naturally regulates insect populations and all the protected species.
The search for new techniques (water recovery, compost, etc.) and the maintenance of manual practices (hand-picking, digging in the plots) are always favoured to help our vines develop without disease and to improve their resilience, particularly to climatic stress. As a result, the soil is more alive, the vines healthier and our wines more faithful to the Pech-Latt terroir.
2022 : The renewal of Château Pech-Latt
Since 2022, a wind of change has been blowing through Château Pech-Latt. Major investments have been made to renovate and modernise our infrastructure.
The winery, the first project to be completed this summer, has been completely redesigned and equipped for state-of-the-art parcel-based vinification. This approach allows for slow, gentle vinification, adapted to each vintage and varying from one cuvée to the next. Each vat is vinified and matured according to its own characteristics and needs, preserving the integrity of the fruit and respecting the terroir so as to create aromatic notes that are borrowed from the DNA of Château Pech-Latt.
This renewal is guided by our desire to innovate and to rediscover the essence of our history, while remaining respectful and faithful to our commitments to nature and our terroir.
